Everything You Should Know About Micro Weddings

What is a Micro Wedding?

Micro weddings are a trend of this year, these are weddings with less than 50 guests. Being smaller in size, it’s usually cheaper, more relaxed and shorter in length than a traditional wedding day. While it still could be the couple and two witnesses, it’s not done in secret or on a whim, as an elopement, but is a fully thought-through and perfectly planned wedding day, just for a smaller guest list.

A micro wedding will always have a ceremony and a reception, but that can take any form the couple like, for example, an outdoor ceremony followed by a casual BBQ or renting out the private room of a restaurant or non-traditional venue for an evening of dinner and dancing or perhaps a weekend long celebration abroad at a private villa in Tuscany. You can include or skip wedding traditions and personalize the day however you please.

A micro-wedding might be the best option for you if:

  • You’d love to elope but still want your family and favorite people to be present.

  • There are certain elements to your wedding day that are non-negotiable to include in your day that wouldn’t be possible with a larger guest list such as a specific venue, or reception style, or destination.

  • You want less pressure around the wedding but still want your day to include the special elements that are ‘you as a couple’.

  • You love the thought of a small gathering of your loved ones to celebrate this most personal of days with you.

  • Exceptional quality is most important over quantity.

Small Receptions Offer Lots of Freedom

In the same way attire and location are open to customization, receptions for microweddings can be tailored to reflect the interests and needs of the couple. It should not be assumed that micro-weddings are less expensive to facilitate, however, smaller receptions allow the wedded couple to spend quality time with each guest, which is something that couples aren’t usually able to do when entertaining larger wedding parties.

Micro Weddings Can be Extraordinary

Whether an intimate afternoon reception aboard a private yacht, a moonlight dinner on Fire Island, or a fun-filled weekend in Jamaica with 12 of your closest friends, hosting a smaller number of guests enables couples to allocate more of their budget towards the finer details that make the experience extraordinary.

Micro Weddings Lends to More Flexibility

A 10-25 person event has a lot more options open to it than a 100-250 person event in terms of where you can actually have your event. Maybe you want to have your ceremony at that small gazebo at the botanical garden where you proposed. Or perhaps you can book a room at your favorite restaurant for your reception. Small groups can fit nearly anywhere!

Micro Weddings are Still Weddings

One might assume that a smaller guest count means that he or she may save big on their wedding, however, it is still a wedding, which means that the experience will take great time and care to plan. Investing in a wedding planner can ensure that no details are overlooked and that your investment is maximized.

How to Start Planning a Micro Wedding

  • Make your guest list. How many guests do you expect to have at your wedding?

  • Will you consider having your event locally or abroad?

  • What are the components that are absolutely necessary to include in your wedding day?

  • What additional support will you need? How much time will you have to plan a wedding?

  • What is your ballpark budget?
